The Federal Capital Territory Administration through its Primary Health Care Board has introduced an additional vaccine called “Rotavirus Vaccine” into the routine immunization for prevention of diarrhoea among children.
The Head, Advocacy Communication and Social Mobilisation, FCT Primary Health Care Board, Nana Yusuf made this know at a stakeholders meeting organized to make Partners understand what rotavirus Vaccine was all about in Abuja .
Addressing the Stakeholders which includes the traditional and religious leaders representative, the Media, Area Councils representatives and the Civil Society Organizations, Mrs Nana Yusuf said there was need for all nursing mothers to take advantage of the ROTA Virus Vaccine to prevent their children from acute diarrhoea.
Mrs Yusuf stated that the Federal Government had made the rotavirus free to prevent the Nigerian Child from being knocked down with diarrhoea, appealed to nursing mothers and guardians to complement Government’s efforts by taking their children to the Health Facilities to access the life savings vaccine.
She also emphasized the need for nursing mother’s to maintain good hygiene, wash your hands thoroughly also wash your child’s hands too, especially those at crawling stage, adding that handwashing was key to prevention.
Given an overview of the disease, the State Immunisation Officer in FCT, who is also a Pharmacist , Amina Usman disclosed that 19 Northern States including FCT would commence the Administration of the vaccine next week Monday for children under the 6 – 14 weeks.
According to the State Immunisation Officer, some of the symptoms of the virus include fever, vomiting and stooling.
On his part, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Muhammad Kawu who assured the Public that the vaccines would be made available in all PHCs, appealed to all Stakeholders, particularly the community leaders to lend their voices in amplifing the importance of the vaccine.
