The British High Commission in Nigeria has advised its nationals to “stay alert and avoid non-essential travel” within the Federal Capital Territory due to an increased threat of terrorist attack in the nation’s capital.
According to a statement by the British High Commission in Abuja, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advice on October 26 to British nationals, which outlines that there is an increased threat of terrorist attack in Abuja.
The statement said the British High Commission remained “open for essential services” as the travel advice would constantly be reviewed to make sure it reflects the current situation in Abuja and Nigeria.
FCDO travel advice exists to inform British nationals to make decisions about traveling abroad.
British nationals “are advised to stay alert, avoid non-essential travel within the city and follow the local news and the advice of security authorities”, the statement declared.
Other states in Nigeria, where British nationals are advised to avoid essential travel, include: Bauchi, Kano, Jigawa, Niger and Sokoto.
Others are: Kogi, Abia, Plateau, Taraba, as well as within 20km of the border with Niger in Kebbi State and non-riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers States.
