The $1.2 billion Zungeru Hydroelectric Power Project in Niger state, expected to add 700 mega watts of electricity to the national grid is to be commissioned in the first quarter of next year.
Mr Abubakar Aliyu, Minister of Power, made the announcement during an inspection tour of the Zungeru power plant.
Mr Aliyu, who was accompanied by Secretary to Niger State Government Secretary, Ahmed Ibrahim Matane, said that the project has reached a 98% completion level.
The Minister while inspecting the power project’s major operating units, said that work on three of the turbines, each producing 175 Mega Watts of electricity, has been completed and effectively tested.
Mr Aliyu explained that the Zungeru Power Project was part of the Federal Government’s plan to reposition power generation in stages across the country.
Secretary to the Niger State Government, Ahmed Ibrahim Matane, explained that the Zungeru Power Project was a multi-purpose electricity project that has abundant agricultural potential for the host communities to harness and enhance their economic status.
Project Manager, Mr Abiy Getahun who took the Minister and his entourage round the facilities, gave an assurance that work would be completed on schedule.
