Reaction from ASUU
Reacting to the pulling out by some state universities from ASUU, the University of Abuja chapter chairman of the Union, Dr Kasim Umar said some of the affected institutions such as Lagos state University never embarked on strike in the first instance, stressing that the University management sacked it members over 5 years ago and the issue has been in court.
The Universities said to be pulling out never embarked on strike as they have one issue or the other, some were just on observer status. In the union, if you are on observer status it means you haven’t been granted full approval to run a chapter except certain conditions are met.
Lagos state University was never on strike because over 5 years ago the management sacked some of our members, we have issue with the management, we are in court, so in that place you dont expect strike.
Gombe is part of strike, the management is just forcing them to resume. He stated
Dr Umar added that the ASUU strike in public universities across the country is to improve the status of university education for global competitiveness
‘’ASUU reaffirms its belief in the sanctity of a stable academic system. Were it within our control, our universities would never have been shut for one day! However, ASUU was forced into taking this painful decision to prevent members of the Nigerian Children from the ruling class and their foreign collaborators from further destroying whatever is left of our public universities. We are all victims. We need the understanding, solidarity and sacrifices of all to ensure that every qualified Nigerian youth who cannot afford the cost of private university education or foreign studies has unhindered access to quality university education.
ASUU strikes are aimed at saving public education, and ensuring that Governments (Federal and State) use our common patrimony to support quality public university education. This is our collective obligation’’.
All federal Universities are still on strike.
