Foreign airlines selling tickets to Nigerians in dollars will be penalised by the federal government.
Minister of Aviation Hadi Sirika who disclosed this to state house correspondents after the federal executive council (FEC) meeting described the practice as a violation of Nigerian laws.
According to Sirika, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) had been instructed to swing into action by protecting the interest of Nigerians against malpractices, warning that no violator, no matter how highly placed, would be spared if caught in violation.
He said the government’s findings revealed that some airlines refused naira and charged their ticket fares in dollars.
Sirika said just N651 million (N352 million and N299 million) had been spent by the federal government on advisory services for Nigeria Air.
He denied claims that despite the government owning only a 5% share, the airline project had sucked up almost N14.6 billion in funding.
